Unarmed People and the Constant Battle of Wits

The biggest thing that infuriates me to no end is when gun-grabbers can’t get the facts straight. If you want to debate – hell, even argue – about guns and gun control, I have no problem doing so. Sometimes I even enjoy it. However, when you argue with someone who constantly screams terms like “automatic weapons, “shooting down planes,” or “killing babies,” I just want to throw my hands up. As the old saying goes, “you can’t have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.” I read a statement this morning from New York Rep. Charlie Rangel that made my scrape my knuckles on the ceiling.

I was eating my lunch this afternoon while perusing my Facebook timeline, when I came across a post from The FOX Nation about a comment Mr. Rangle made this morning on MSNBC regarding the failure of the so-called Assault Weapons Ban.

“I’m ashamed to admit it but its politics and its money, the NRA has taken this position, there is no reason, there is no foundation. There is no hunter that needs automatic military weapons to enjoy the culture of going hunting.

But you know it’s really basically the absence of the voices of the good people. I cannot believe that politicians are afraid of the NRA, if they thought for one minute that the churches and the synagogue and the priests and the ministers were saying “Hey! Do the right thing and we have your back.”

We’re talking about millions of kids dying – being shot down by assault weapons, we’re talking about handguns easier in the inner cities, to get these guns in the inner cities, than to get computers. This is not just a political issue, it’s a moral issue and so when we condemn the NRA we should no ignore the fact that a lot of people that have taken moral positions have been solid on this big one.”

Mr. Rangel, I have no doubt you’re an intelligent person. Regardless of what people say, you can’t be in a position you’re in without it. But, that’s one of the dumbest statements I’ve ever heard in my entire life.

First of all, automatic weapons have been highly regulated and outlawed since 1986. Second, the 2nd Amendment doesn’t have a damn thing to do with hunting or any other sport. Last, but certainly not least, millions of kids are not dying or being shot down by so-called assault weapons. Let me make my argument with facts, and not just bullshit.

  • 12,664 murders in 2011
  • Handguns – 6,620
  • Knives – 1,694
  • Fist and/or feet – 728
  • Blunt objects – 486
  • Rifles – 323

Yes, you read that right. In 2011, more than twice as many people were beaten to death than were killed by a rifle of SOME SORT.

So you see, Mr. Rangel, the crap you spewed this morning was just wrong, plain and simple. Now, normally I don’t care if someone on TV makes a fool of himself or herself. That’s your prerogative. The problem is, however, people who don’t know any better hear what you say and actually believe you, because they don’t know the difference. This is what makes my blood boil. If you want to attack guns and gun owners, you better come at us with a lot more than just senseless bullshit. I’m sick of it.
